Sorry, been ill this weekend so I haven't yet had time to do the YouTube version of the playlist. I will try and sort it eventually - not least because one of my favourite pop videos ever is in the lower reaches of the chart.

Anyway the chart itself has a modern resonance as it comes from the UK's last major vogue for "Latino" music, which launched a couple of stars (one ofwhom is still charting in 2017).
On the other hand, it's also stuffed with the very 1999 phenomenon of singles charting on import ahead of a UK release. Meanwhile, a successful album act see their highest ever position on the singles chart, not with the songyou might have guessed. You probably on't guess what my favourite song with a list of girls' names in is either, but it's here.
Oh, and I've just found that the Number 1 act in this chart covered the Number 1 single in the 1982 chart I posted last week.

Surprising number of imports in this chart.

Not just a little bit of irritation then?

Not mine.

I don't think we heard much more from DJ Jurgen did we?

I agree, although I like some of the other mixes as well.

Good but not their best.

I dunno, it is at least relatively melodic.

Yeah, their best song IMO.

> Surprising number of imports in this chart.

As I said in the intro bit, this was kind of the peak time for them. I
suppose it's a combination of the long-established practice of songs
being promoted in the UK after success elsewhere and the late-90s
phenomenon of heavy promotion before a UK release creating pent-up
demand. I suppose it's a precursor to people downloading fake versions
in the 2000s.

There are a few still not online (including the Tindersticks one which used to be there) but I found all the songs at least.

Correct.

As much for how hot she looks in the video, as for the song itself (I
may have mentioned that before). :p

There's no 'whoosh' here unless you *meant* to write 'band' rather than
'bad'.

It's only 18 years ago, but it seems a lifetime away. In some ways it
was. My own formative musical years had been the late 70s and early
80s, the rise of punk, synthpop and the new romantic scene. But,
having had a fairly blank period as far as chart music goes from the
late 80s through to the mid-90s, the stuff that I listened to in 1999
was, in my mind, divided between what I labelled "classic" (what radio
stations call "gold") from my earlier era and "current" stuff from
what was on the radio at the time. And so a lot of what's in here is
still filed in my memory as "current", despite the fact that it's now
as far in the past as my formative 70s/80s stuff was in 1999. Which is
scary, and makes me feel old.

Musically, this is very much a late 90s/turn of the century chart.
There's plenty of classic 90s dance in here, but also some nods to
21st century developments. And a fair amount of the relatively brief
fad for Latino music. Possibly somewhat unusally, I haven't seen any
acts in here play live.

>1. (1) Lou Bega Mambo No 5 (A Little Bit Of...)

I liked this at the time. Later used as the theme tune to cricket,
when Channel 4 poached it from the BBC. The idea of test cricket on
terrestrial TV now seems so antiquated. And Sky's cricket theme tune
is entirely unmemorable.

>2. (NE) DJ Jean The Launch

Not hugely memorable.

>3. (2) Shaft (Mucho Mambo) Sway

Nor is this.

>4. (NE) Enrique Iglesias Bailamos

Enrique's attempt to fuse Latin and dance. Sounds a bit naff, now.

>5. (NE) A1 Summertime Of Our Lives

Bit late in the year for a summer-themed song.

>6. (NE) Martine McCutcheon I've Got You

Bland.

>7. (3) Geri Halliwell Mi Chico Latino

Geri does Latin. Badly.

>8. (5) DJ Jurgen Presents Alice Deejay Better Off Alone

Classic dance track. Still one of my favourites.

>9. (4) Moloko Sing It Back {1999 Remix}

Good song. Although the '1999 remix' suggests that this was a
reworking of a previous hit, this was the version that was most
successful. It's also slightly misleading, since the original was
released earlier in 1999.

>10. (9) TLC Unpretty

Bland.

>13. (10) Ricky Martin Livin' La Vida Loca

More Latin. Good song, as it happens.

>16. (14) Ronan Keating When You Say Nothing At All

I don't normally like boy bands and their derivatives. But I do quite
like this.

>20. (15) Texas Summer Son

This was one of my favourites at the time. For reasons which are
possibly a bit complex to explain, this song now always reminds me of
the Peak District.

>23. (11) Stereophonics I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio

Recently on the Absolute Radio iPod.

>29. (21) Eminem Guilty Conscience ft Dr Dre

Probably my favourite Eminem and Dr Dre song. This is actually very
inventive.

>36. (25) Travis Why Does It Always Rain On Me?

I've been asking myself the same question lately, the way that the
weather has been.

>38. (31) ATB 9PM (Till I Come)
>39. (51) Eiffel 65 Blue (Da Ba Dee) {import}

Two more classic 90s dance tracks.

>40. (33) Madonna Beautiful Stranger

Good song. One of my favourites at the time. Madonna's collaborations
with William Orbit produced, in my opinion, some of her best songs.

>42. (36) Vengaboys Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!

All part of the Vengacliche.

>57. (38) Yazoo Only You {1999 mix}

This was a brilliant song to begin with, that didn't gain anything
from being remixed.

>67. (50) The Divine Comedy The Pop Singer's Fear Of The Pollen Count

Good song.

>68. (66) Baz Luhrmann Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

The older I get, the more true the words of this track become.

>69. (NE) Vengaboys We're Going To Ibiza (import)

Cheese. But enjoyable cheese.

>80. (RE) Chemical Brothers Hey Boy Hey Girl

Great song.

>83. (RE) Blur Coffee + TV

Also recently on the Absolute Radio iPod.

>93. (RE) Madonna Nothing Really Matters

One of my favourites at the time.
